The Carson City Council has acknowledged the ongoing contributions of the Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding (NCRP) program at CSUDH in equipping future leaders with the tools they need to better combat hatred and racism in our local communities. A proclamation marking Nov. 13-19 as LA vs. Hate - United Against Hate Week in Carson highlighted the work of the NCRP in providing a “supportive and friendly learning environment” that helps give students “practical skills and knowledge” that can be used in communities, businesses, and local governments to combat hate and promote inclusion and equity. Fryday, who heads the California Volunteers Office of the Governor that oversees College Corps, attended a roundtable discussion at the Innovation and Instruction Building to hear directly from CSUDH fellows about what the program means to them and what they hope to accomplish in their chosen service areas. “We're so proud of this program,” said Fryday in his opening remarks to College Corps fellows, CSUDH administrators and faculty, ... Helping Student Vets Chart a Path to Success
Tucked away on the third floor of Leo F. Cain Library, the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) may be small, but it exerts an outsized influence on the lives of students making the challenging transition from military service to academic life. “The Veterans Resource Center is the reason I'm here today and about to graduate with my bachelor's degree in business administration in December,” says Luigi Torres, 30, a former artillery cannoneer in the U.S. Marines. “It's the family that you don't think you need and that you don't know you have.” The VRC currently serves about 350 student veterans at CSUDH -250 who attend using the GI Bill, and another 100 who get support through the Cal-Vet ... 4th Annual Celebrate First Generation College Students
Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and alumni joined in celebration of Toros who are the first in their family to attend or graduate from college on Nov. 8 for the fourth annual CSUDH “Celebrate First Generation College Students.” Rain caused a location change for the celebration, but the weather did not dampen the spirits of those who attended. They enthusiastically demonstrated that while first generation students don't have the family history of college to lean on as they navigate college life, they do have a strong network from other first-gens, the entire campus community, and the many services in place at CSUDH to support their success. Teddy the Toro, the CSUDH ... Read More

Toro Women’s Basketball Building on Success
For the 2022-23 CSUDH women's basketball team, this season is all about building on the foundation of success that they established last year. With an entirely new batch pf players, the team was able to finish fourth in the ultra-competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). This season, they're looking for more. “Last season was a pleasant surprise,” says head coach John Bonner, who is entering his seventh year in charge of the program. “We had 12 new players that we hadn't coached before, and one returning player who had redshirted. Because we were so young and didn't have a lot of experience, we didn't know what to expect.” “We wanted to utilize that time to ... Read More

CSUDH is Changing the Face of Sustainability
Sustainability is about more than just greenhouse gas reduction and better waste management, says Jenney Hall, lecturer in environmental studies at CSUDH. “Sustainability is ultimately about perpetuating systems. When you perpetuate systems, you must ask if those systems are serving everyone,” Hall says. “I think that our unique perspective is incorporating social justice, environmental justice, and climate justice into that transition.” Integrating sustainability with social and educational inequities is critical to CSUDH's approach, says Ellie Perry, manager of the university's Office of Sustainability. “We're a small, under-resourced institution that caters predominantly to ... She joined students from 65 other campuses and 33 different states at the forum. “It was amazing,” says Nelson. “I was only there for two days, but I slept a lot on the plane, so I had time to walk around and see as much as I could–to just soak it all in, because I don't know when I'll be going to Washington DC again!” In selecting a ...
