KABC: Changing the Stigma of Low Rider Cars and Helping Local Students in the Process

Source: KABC 7 (video) Scholars United is an organization that helps formerly incarcerated students turn their lives around. The group put on a first-of-its kind lowrider car show. The event, which was held at CSU Dominguez Hills, is tying spruced-up cars to students in need of a helping hand. Shiny paint jobs, vintage car models and hydraulics - that's what you'd find at a lowrider car show called, Uniting Cars, Culture and Education. The event had a specific goal. CSUDH Workforce Integration Network Awarded Prestigious Volcker Alliance Grant

The CSUDH Workforce Integration Network (WIN) has been selected as the recipient of the Volcker Alliance's Government-to-University Talent Connection Grant. The $40,000 grant supports WIN's innovative outreach effort: From Public Sector Job Aggregator Tool to CSU Public Sector Alliance. Addressing the needs of a public sector workforce in crisis due to an aging workforce and a shortage of talent, WIN will design an outreach and education module to address the way young people seek careers–with a focus on finding meaning in work. South Bay Economic Forecast Predicts the Future is Green

In spite of uncertainty around interest rates and inflation, the South Bay has reasons to be optimistic over the next year. Source: Daily Breeze The South Bay economic forecast has neither ominous storm clouds nor clear skies ahead – but predicts, rather, a moderately sunny future, with some mildly concerning clouds looming. That's according to the authors of the eighth annual South Bay Economic Forecast and Industry Outlook. CSUDH History Woven into New Book about Los Angeles Street Groups

More than 30 years ago, CSUDH Professor Emeritus of Sociology John C. Quicker and alumnus Akil S. Batani-Khalfani began a sociological and historical deep dive into the origins of street groups in South Los Angeles. Their years of research, which began during their time together at CSUDH, have turned into a new book: Before Crips: Fussin', Cussin', and Discussin' Among South Los Angeles Juvenile Gangs (Temple University Press, July 2022). In 1970, when Quicker began teaching sociology at what was then known as California State College Dominguez Hills, the campus and surrounding community were in the throes of change. Gerth Archives Marks New Milestones in Documenting History

The CSUDH Gerth Archives and Special Collections, noted for its preservation of Southern California histories and cultures, has had three major developments toward its mission of making materials more accessible to the public. The Archives is inviting the campus community and public to explore the newly completed Japanese American Digitization Project online, as well as the “Know Justice, Know Peace” exhibition currently on view in the University Library. In addition, the Archives recently received a $150,000 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commissions to catalog the L.A. Free Press collection. Apple: Community Education Initiative Catalyzes Learning in More Than 600 Communities

Source: Apple Newsroom Several weeks ago, California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) welcomed more than 300 elementary and middle school students from across Los Angeles to its Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE) lab for a “STEAM Max” experience. The event gave participants from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn new science and technology skills – including app design. That same week, the university kicked off after-school coding clubs at six elementary and middle schools, and began hosting a regular Saturday STEM Exploration Day where activities are coached by CSUDH computer science majors. CSUDH Part of $1.8 Million National Science Foundation Grant

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded funding to six institutions from the California State University (CSU) system, including CSUDH, to help transform the early curriculum experience of historically marginalized students in computing. The alliance brings together CSUDH, CSU Fullerton, CSU Los Angeles, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and San Francisco State University, campuses which have identified that a disproportionate percentage of underrepresented minority students drop out of their computer science major in the first two years of study.
