Professional Background
Dr. McCurn’s research explores issues related to gender and inner city life with a particular focus on inequality and survival in impoverished communities. She is currently developing a book manuscript, which is based on two years of field research in Oakland, Calif., and explores how young black women and girls negotiate urban public space. Her research has received awards from the American Sociological Association’s Race, Gender, and Class Section as well as funding from the National Science Foundation and the William T. Grant Foundation.
