William “Bill” Huston, who served at the helm of the Watson Land Company for more than 40 years, died on March 9 at the age of 83. Widely recognized throughout California as a leader in economic and industrial development, Huston was responsible for convincing the Dominguez Estate Company to sell its land to the state of California for a new public college in the South Bay region of Los Angeles. Jerry Groomes Endowed Scholarship Created for Public Administration Students at CSU Dominguez Hills
With an initial contribution from Watson Land Company, California State University, Dominguez Hills has established the Jerry Groomes Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Public Administration, named in honor of the former Carson city manager. Watson Land Company and CSU Dominguez Hills officials made the announcement of the scholarship at a farewell party for Groomes in early January. Groomes, who had served as city manager of the city of Carson for the past 12 years, left the position to take a job as director of the Southeastern Economic Development Corporation in San Diego. President Mildred García represented California State University, Dominguez Hills during the CSU's Super Sunday event on Feb. 20 by addressing the congregation of Family of Faith Christian Center, a local church that meets in the Loker Student Union. This Sunday, Feb. 20, California State University, Dominguez Hills president Mildred García will address the congregation of the Family of Faith Christian Center, led by Pastor Sherman Gordon, as part of the CSU's statewide Super Sunday events at more than 100 African American churches throughout the state in February. García will speak at both of the church's services that day, which begin at 7:30 and 10 a.m. and take place in a familiar location to García -- the Loker Student Union ballroom on the university's campus.
