The California State University, Dominguez Hills Labor Studies Program and Labor Studies Club presents the Third Annual Labor, Social and Environmental Justice Fair on Thursday, April 21, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the east walkway of the Loker Student Union. Herman J. Loether (1930-2011): Sociologist Established Tradition and Campus Research
Dr. Herman J. Loether, emeritus professor and founding faculty member of the sociology department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, died of cancer on March 25. During his 30 years at the university, Loether established the Social Systems Research Center (now known as the Urban Community Research Center) and is the only CSU faculty member to be honored as a CSU Outstanding Professor Award nominee at two different campuses; at CSU Los Angeles in 1965, and at CSU Dominguez Hills in 1973 and 1984. During National Poetry Month, the Department of English at California State University, Dominguez Hills will host the annual Pat Eliet Lecture featuring poet and novelist Sesshu Foster as the guest speaker on Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Loker Student Union Ballroom. The lecture, with a book signing immediately following, is free and open to the public. As the headlines keep the world informed of the disaster unfolding in Japan for the last two weeks - a 9.0 earthquake, followed by a tsunami that caused extensive damage to a nuclear power plant - students at California State University, Dominguez Hills took charge. Members of the Association of Political Science Students (APSS), the Student Health and Environmental League (SHEL), and the Department of Political Science held a fundraiser March 14-16. When senior Jeremy Napial visited the Philippines for the first time in sixth grade, he was struck by the contrasts between large cities like Manila and his family's rural home of Iloilo. “It shaped me at a young age,” he recalls. “You can't hear anything except for the people and the church bells, and maybe the karaoke bar that's open at night, not letting you sleep. I met an aunt who was dying of stomach cancer and going blind from it.
