The California State University, Dominguez Hills Labor Studies Program and Labor Studies Club presents the Fifth Annual Labor, Social and Environmental Justice Fair on Thursday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the East Walkway of the Loker Student Union. The ever-animated and provocative author, activist, philosopher and scholar Cornel West addressed a full house at California State University, Dominguez Hills on Nov. 1, energizing approximately 1,000 visitors in the Loker Student Union Ballroom and spillover crowds on the first and second floor lobbies who listened to his talk via live audio feed. Career Panel Shares Crime Fighting Experience
A Crime Fighting Careers Panel was hosted by the Career Center at California State University, Dominguez Hills on Nov. 9 in the Loker Student Union. Carol Bosman-Anderson, the center's interim director, invited professionals in crime fighting careers who did not necessarily have a criminal justice degree, but who were successful in their chosen fields. She selected these guests to show students that many majors can be useful in preparing for a career in law enforcement and students do not need to major in criminal justice in order to pursue a crime fighting career. Exhibit Explores Mid-Century Lives of Japanese Americans in Southern California
For more than 40 years, historians and archivists at California State University, Dominguez Hills have been gathering materials documenting the lives of Japanese Americans in the South Bay and Los Angeles. Consisting of photographs, yearbooks, and artwork, as well as documents such as letters and property leases, “Building Evidence: Japanese Americans in Southern California During Mid-Century - 40 Years of Collecting, An Exhibition” –on view now through March 2012–focuses on the lives and obstacles faced by Japanese Americans in the South Bay and Los Angeles prior to, during, and after World War II. Vivian Price: Labor Expert’s Documentary on Bracero Program to Be Aired on PBS
“Harvest of Loneliness (Cosecha Triste),” a documentary co-directed by Vivian Price, professor of interdisciplinary studies and coordinator of the labor studies program at California State University, Dominguez Hills, will be aired on PBS stations throughout the country in September and October. In the film, Price and Gilbert Gonzalez, professor emeritus of Chicana/o studies at UC Irvine, examine what was known as the bracero program, which recruited Mexican laborers for temporary work in the United States from 1942 to 1964.
