California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) is a partner campus on three National Science Foundation (NSF) grants totaling $2.5 million to continue their success in increasing the number of Hispanic and other underserved students studying computer science. The lead grant is a five-year, $2 million Computing Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institutions (CAHSI) award. CSUDH Receives $2.5 Million to Provide Compton Unified Student Tutoring
Compton Unified School District (CUSD) has awarded California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) more than $2.5 million in contracts to provide programs that offer supplemental tutoring and instruction for CUSD students, and professional development for all the district's middle school math teachers. To improve student learning, CSUDH received $1.375 million to create and launch the Compton-Toros Academy (CTA), a new English and mathematics supplemental instruction and tutoring program for 3rd through 12th grade students at CUSD. On a Thursday morning last spring, Paul Penoliar and his CSUDH student assistant, Isabelle Guevera, help 15 older adults do a series of stretching exercises. Stretching will give you a better quality of movement,” the longtime occupational therapist and CSUDH lecturer tells them. “It helps you to become more flexible. CSU Dominguez Hills Student Betty Solares Receives CSU Trustees’ Award
Bertha (Betty) Solares, a human services major and sociology minor at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), has endured much in her life: an abusive mother, teen pregnancy, an abusive husband, drug addiction, and depression. At her lowest point she was living on the streets, had lost custody of her child, and wound up in jail twice. When Solares learned she was pregnant with her second daughter, she made the decision to turn her life around. Today, Solares carries a 3.6 GPA at CSUDH, and she is not letting her troubled past cripple her. Instead, she is using it as her inspiration to help and serve others. Mark Muller Named New Chair of Orthotics and Prosthetics Department
Mark Muller, CPO, FAAOP, MS, has been named the new chair of the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), Dean Gary Sayed of the College of Health, Human Services, and Nursing announced. Muller joined CSUDH in 2006, and immediately went to work developing new curricula in gait and biomechanics, along with working to upgrade all course objectives. Prior to CSUDH, Muller worked in private practice in San Diego, served as education manager for Ossur Americas, and taught at Northwestern University P&O Center.
