California State University, Dominguez Hills posted the fifth straight year of steady fundraising growth, with $4.12 million raised for the university through corporate, foundation and individual giving and pledges in fiscal year 2011-12. The year (July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012) saw a nearly 25 percent increase in overall donations from the previous year, and a 60 percent increase in alumni giving. In fact, it was the fifth year in a row the university's fundraising efforts have exceeded the previous year. Bernard Osher Foundation Endows $500,000 for Transfer Student Scholarships
California State University, Dominguez Hills has been awarded a $500,000 endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation to establish the Osher Scholarship for students transferring from California community colleges. Students transferring to CSU Dominguez Hills from one of the 112 campuses in the California Community College system who meet the eligibility requirements will be able to apply for the scholarship. Nearly 250 visitors from throughout California, including State Senator Rod Wright, and Assemblymembers Bonnie Lowenthal (CA-54th) and Diane Harkley (CA-73rd), attended a half-day Cap and Trade Forum co-hosted by Assemblymembers Isadore Hall, III (CA-52nd) and Susan Bonilla (CA-11th) on Friday at California State University, Dominguez Hills in the Loker Student Union. The legislators and experts discussed the implications of the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) Cap and Trade program that is set to regulate 600 of the state's largest greenhouse gas emitting stationary sources. Freshman Move-in Day Helps Students Feel at Home at College
A week before the bulk of the student body and faculty returned to school this semester, a contingent of freshmen had already made themselves at home on campus. Literally. With the help of their families, the first-time California State University, Dominguez Hills students moved into University Housing. In 90-degree weather, nearly 200 freshmen filled and ferried carts provided by housing, lugged suitcases, and carried boxes and makeshift totes to their new digs for the school year. O&P Students Get Olympic-Style Greeting
In June, students, faculty and alumni of the CSU Dominguez Hills Orthotics and Prosthetics program were give the opportunity to meet Oscar Pistorius, who with his debut at the 2012 London Olympics in August became the first double leg amputee to participate in an able-bodied Olympics. The special event was organized by global orthopedic design company Ossur and held at its headquarters in Foothill Ranch. A longtime supporter of CSUDH O&P, Ossur is a major sponsor of Pistorius, providing him with his state-of-the-art prosthetic feet for over six years. Linda Corsey DeYampert knows how to tackle a challenge. The California State University, Dominguez Hills alumna (Class of '99, B.S., business management) took on a traditionally male-dominated industry when in 2006 she stepped into the role of manager of scheduling operations for one of the fastest-growing cable networks in the country - the National Football League (NFL) Network in Culver City. CSU Dominguez Hills Awarded Federal Grant to IMPACT Math Teacher Development
California State University, Dominguez Hills has received the first award of a three-year $749,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program to offer professional development and support to algebra teachers in middle and high schools in predominately economically disadvantaged areas of Carson and Los Angeles that serve a large minority population. Twenty-one teachers from middle and high schools in the south region of the Los Angeles Unified School District were back in the classroom for three weeks this summer, but unlike during the school year, they were not in front of the class. This year, Kristina (Kris) Hale and Carlos Giron are expanding their world view, literally. The juniors from California State University, Dominguez Hills have been named 2012-13 recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a competitive grant program through the U.S. State Department that aims to make it financially easier for undergraduates to afford the opportunity to study abroad either for a summer, semester, or year.
