Sulaiman Bah Named West Region Player of the Year
After helping to lead the CSUDH men's soccer team to their best season in years, Toro sophomore midfielder Sulaiman Bah won the Division II Conference Commissioners Association West Region Player of the Year for the 2022 season. He became the first CSUDH player to win the award. Bah finished the season with 18 goals and 12 assists, establishing a new CSUDH single-season scoring record. Seven of his goals were match-winners, which ranked first among all players in NCAA Division II. CSUDH Receives $5.3 Million to Address Digital Divide in the South Bay
The CSUDH Workforce Integration Network (WIN) has been awarded $5.3 million through the National Telecommunication and Information Administration's Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program (CMC). The funds will support “Closing the Digital Divide with CSUDH-WIN,” an innovative outreach effort which connects CSUDH students with partnering organizations to provide training, equipment, and technology resources to members of the community. New Book Explores the Resilience of the Ancient Maya
Throughout human history, civilizations have had to adapt to ever-shifting environments in order to survive–whether sudden, catastrophic climate events, or gradual changes that span centuries. These human-environmental relationships are at the center of The Maya and Climate Change (Oxford University Press, Nov. 2022), a new book by CSUDH Assistant Professor of Anthropology Ken Seligson. State Awards CSUDH $3 Million Grant for Health Professions Pathways Program
The California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) has awarded a $3 million grant to CSUDH to help establish a Health Professions Pathway Program in the College of Health, Human Services and Nursing (CHHSN). College of Education Awarded $2.57 Million Grant
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the College of Education a five-year, $2.571 million grant in support of Project MEDALLA (Multilingual Educator Development Advancing Language Learning Achievement/Activism), which aims to create a network of certified bilingual educators in the greater Los Angeles area. Until the 2016 passing of the Multilingual Education Act in California, English immersion classes had been required for English learners in the state. Now, by law, schools must provide dual language programs if requested by enough parents. After days of vote counting, CSUDH alumni Karen Bass and Rex Richardson have scored major victories in a pair of closely-watched mayoral races in Los Angeles and Long Beach, respectively. Their wins clearly demonstrate how Toros have become important players in Southern California politics—when they take office, CSUDH alumni will hold mayorships in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Carson, Compton, and Hawthorne. Information Technology (IT) Consultant Danny Le has only been working at CSUDH for a year, but in a way, getting a job on campus was a kind of homecoming–Le is a Toro alum who graduated with a BA in computer technology in 2014. The Gardena native returned to CSUDH in 2021, and now spends his days “running around campus trying to assist everyone with their technical issues.” He says he's proud to be able to “come back and use the skills I've learned here to give back to students, faculty, staff, and the community.” He doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon, either.
