Jonathon Grasse’s New Book Explores Brazilian Music History
When ethnomusicologist, composer, and CSUDH Professor of Music Jonathon Grasse first started traveling to Brazil 30 years ago, he had no intention of becoming a historian of the country's music–he was simply exploring the country with his Brazilian wife. Before long, though, he became fascinated by the nation's diverse regional musical heritages, adapting his research and writing to teach a course on Brazilian music at UCLA, where he earned his doctorate. Eventually, his focus narrowed to the region that his wife hails from: Minas Gerais, a state in southeastern Brazil that is deeply connected to the nation's slave past and home to many traditions related to the African diaspora. Devon Tsuno Selected for Metro Station Art Installation
Artwork by California State University, Dominguez Hills Assistant Professor of Art Devon Tsuno will soon become part of the greater Los Angeles region's rich history of public art projects. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) recently named Tsuno among 17 artists chosen to create site-specific, integrated artworks for four stations along its Purple Line (D Line) Extension Sections 2 and 3. “I think that having grown up in L.A. and being the fourth generation of my family in Los Angeles, it's amazing to create something that's permanent, that's reflective of those multiple generations of my family,” said Tsuno of the opportunity. For Morgan Kirk, serving as coordinator of the CSUDH Basic Needs Program is the best job on campus. “I love what I do!” she declares. “It gives me joy that our services are helping students in need. I enjoy knowing that I am making a difference in their lives.” Kirk's position at CSUDH involves supporting students who face food and/or housing insecurities on campus. She provides case management for housing insecure students, and supports students with temporary emergency housing. Commencement 2022 Strikes a Joyful Chord
Excitement, jubilation, and pride were palpable throughout the six Commencement 2022 ceremonies, where thousands of graduating Toros finally realized their dreams of walking the stage to the resounding cheers of family and friends. This year, CSUDH welcomed the return to its traditional commencement format, with more than 3,300 graduating students and 34,000 guests packing the Dignity Health Sports Park Tennis Stadium over the course of May 20 and 21. Six distinguished speakers gave words of advice, inspiration, and congratulations at the Commencement 2022 ceremonies in the Dignity Health Sports Park Tennis Stadium. Four of the speakers were CSUDH alumni, and all were eminent leaders from Southern California's private or public sectors. Michael Lawson, CEO and President of Los Angeles Urban League, was both a keynote speaker and CSUDH's recipient of a CSU honorary Doctor of Laws.
