Guided by their civic duty and desire to help enrich the communities in which they live and/or serve, dozens of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) students and leaders joined residents in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles on Aug. 15 during “CSUDH Day of Service” to plant seeds of hope in a community still struggling 50 years after the Watts Rebellion. Just over six weeks since his appointment as vice president of the Division of Student Affairs at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), William Franklin is already developing a campus-wide and collaborative approach to enhancing the way the division serves students, both on and off campus. Caifornia State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) computer science majors Dominique Dalanni and Gary Walker join chemistry major Alice Heng as recipients of the 2015 Edison STEM Scholarship, which helps low-income students and women studying in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields offset the high cost of attending college. For their personal commitment and ongoing contributions to community service, Megan Rodriquez, a Digital Media Arts (DMA) major, and Kelsey Nicks, an Occupational Therapy student, have received the California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Alumni Association Jamina O. Barnes Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is named in memory of Barnes, the former director of Alumni Relations at CSUDH, and is awarded annually to one eligible full-time undergraduate and one graduate student.
