Black Chamber President to Discuss Economic Sustainability for African American Businesses
On Monday, Feb. 13, the California African American Political and Economic Institute (CAAPEI) at California State University, Dominguez Hills presents “Building Economically Sustainable Communities through Small Business Development,” a lecture by Aubry L. Stone, president/CEO of the California Black Chamber of Commerce and director of the California Black Chamber Foundation. Super Sunday: Spreading the Gospel of College to African American Communities
Church has long been the heart and soul of the African American community, and when the California State University system was looking at effective ways to increase college-going rates among black students, the church was a natural starting point. And since 2005, CSU president, vice presidents and Chancellor Charlie Reed–along with students and staff from the 23 campuses–have been visiting black churches throughout the state during the month of February for an event that is known as Super Sunday. On Saturday, Jan. 28, approximately 200 people were on campus to attend the College is Possible town hall meeting sponsored by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and Staples Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Staples office supply company. Intended to promote the importance of higher education for students and their families, the event provided participants with the opportunity to attend various bilingual presentations on topics such as preparing and paying for college, applying for college, and researching financial aid.
