Source: Spectrum 1 News Student Terrie Kennon is studying political development and Africana studies at Cal State University Dominguez Hills. Kennon's focus is mass incarceration in the Black community. “Not one single person who is male in my family has not been in prison,” she said. “That impacts the family dynamic horribly.” Kennon wants to reform the system and work in public policy and politics after school. She has joined the Dymally Institute Fellows program, which exposes students of color to careers in politics and social justice. Diversity is needed. Students walking on CSUDH campus

Source: LAist Like the Madrigals in the beginning of “Encanto,” Paty Lozano does not want to talk about Bruno. Her one-year-old daughter watches the Disney animated film every day — sometimes more than once. Everyone else in the family is sick of it. But for baby Soleil, the musical fantasy set in Colombia is a type of salve, so much so that it’s enabled Lozano to do the impossible: take a shower during the day. Before jumping in for a quick rinse, Lozano drags Soleil’s high chair to the edge of the bathroom and straps her into place. Then, she puts another chair in front of the baby as an added safety measure and sets the iPad on her food tray. With Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash ... Read More

Graduating student giving Toro hand signal

CSUDH has launched a new program designed to help students who left the university before completing their degree. Once a Toro, Always a Toro is a degree completion pathway that removes many of the barriers that often dissuade former students from re-enrolling, giving them the confidence to re-launch their career goals, improving their earning potential, and exemplifying college completion for themselves, their family, and their community. “CSUDH students who have paused their education often cite the challenges of balancing work, school, family obligations, financial hardships, and personal challenges,” said Sabrina Sanders, who oversees the program.
