A longtime leader in helping students ascend the economic ladder, CSU Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has earned another accolade for elevating students’ socio-economic trajectory. The California Mobility Index (CMI), announced today by the College Futures Foundation, names CSUDH second in the state for delivering on the promise of economic mobility for California learners from low- and moderate-income backgrounds.
“CSUDH’s mission and cultural ethos are rooted in the power of education to transform students’ lives,” said CSUDH President Thomas A. Parham. “This recognition is a testament to our success in giving every student the opportunity to thrive and achieve their fullest potential. With this ranking, we honor and celebrate our students, and the faculty and staff who teach and support them, for their relentless pursuit of excellence, their ambition, their perseverance, and their actualization of their dreams for a better future for themselves and their families.”
Unlike traditional ranking systems of postsecondary institutions, the CMI focuses specifically on the proportion of low- and moderate-income students California institutions enroll and the return on investment they provide this demographic. This is calculated using data from the U.S. Department of Education to measure two factors: 1) the “Price-to-Earnings Premium” for low- and moderate-income students (students whose families earn $0-$75,000 annually) and 2) the proportion of these students enrolled at the institution. For more information on the CMI’s methodology, visit the College Futures Foundation website.
All 23 campuses in the CSU system appear in the index, with 13 CSU campuses among the top 15 institutions ranked.
The CSU campuses among the CMI’s top 15 are:
- Los Angeles (1)
- Dominguez Hills (2)
- Stanislaus (3)
- Bakersfield (4)
- Fresno (5)
- San Bernardino (6)
- Fullerton (7)
- Long Beach (8)
- Northridge (9)
- Pomona (11)
- East Bay (13)
- Sacramento (14)
- San Marcos (15)
CSUDH serves a unique student population, even among CSU campuses. Nearly half of CSUDH students are the first in their families to attend college, 60 percent are Pell eligible, and 80 percent are from historically underrepresented communities—the highest amount in the CSU.
Each year, national college rankings highlight CSUDH’s strength in propelling lower-income students into higher-paying jobs. Read more about CSUDH’s rankings and accolades.
