Students at six more California State University campuses, including five in Southern California, will be offered free iPads and other technology tools during the spring semester, the university announced Wednesday, expanding a program that now includes 14 CSU schools.

Under the program known as CSUCCESS — California State University Connectivity Contributing to Equity and Student Success — first-year and new transfer students at the participating campuses will receive an iPad Air, Apple Pencil and Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. Students will also be offered a free WiFi hotspot device. The students will keep the equipment throughout their time at the CSU.

The program began this fall at eight campuses — Cal State Los Angeles, Northridge, Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Fresno, Humboldt, Maritime Academy and San Marcos. According to the CSU, more than 22,700 students received the devices. The CSU announced Wednesday the program is expanding for the spring semester to include Cal State Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Pomona, San Bernardino and Sonoma.

“I’m excited to expand this important program to even more incoming students this spring to help bridge the digital divide and establish a technological foundation for achievement from day one of their college journey,” CSU Chancellor Joseph I. Castro said in a statement. “Phase One of CSUCCESS was well-received by our students and the program shows tremendous promise in advancing our goals of student success and educational equity.”

Nearly half of CSU undergraduates receive Pell Grants due to financial need, and nearly one-third are the first in their families to attend college, according to the university.
