College of Business Administration and Public Policy
Assistant Professor of Strategy Chacko George Kannothra was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for $300,704 for the project “The Role of Narratives, Identity, and Collective Action in Entrepreneurship,” along with Dr. Carly Offidani-Bertrand and Dr. Maria Paola Ometto of CSU San Marcos.
The project seeks to understand how collectives of individuals, entrepreneurs, and organizations engage in collective action and leverage collective identities to create inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems and build pathways toward social mobility for socially and economically disadvantaged entrepreneurs. This interdisciplinary collaboration between two minority-serving institutions includes budgetary allocations to engage graduate and undergraduate students in research over the next three years.
College of Education
Assistant Professor of Teacher Education Minhye Son has been awarded the 2024-2025 Korean Language and Culture Club Grant ($1,000) by the Korean Education Center in Los Angeles. This grant will support the enrichment of the Korean Culture Club, a recently revitalized student organization at CSUDH which fosters greater engagement with Korean language and cultural activities on campus.
Additionally, Son authored “Content and Language Integration: Pre-Service Teachers’ Design of Culturally Sustaining Social Studies Units for Emergent Bilinguals,” a study based on her students’ work at CSUDH. She also co-authored “Bilingual Pre-Service Teachers’ Evolving Conceptualizations about Curriculum as a Hybrid Space through Multimodal Learning Experiences,” published in the December issue of Teaching and Teacher Education.
College of Health, Human Services, and Nursing
Adjunct Professor of Marital and Family Therapy Chaka McAlpin presented her research and spoke at the National Council of Family Relations Conference in Bellevue, Wash. in November. Her work, entitled “An Investigation of Mating and Dating Preferences Among Heterosexual Black Males Impacting the Likelihood of Marriage,” was for the Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Families section of the conference.
Associate Professor and Chair of Marital and Family Therapy Karen Quek also participated in the National Council of Family Relations Conference. She co-presented “A Qualitative Analysis of the Cultural & Generational Influences on the Faith Journey of 2nd Generation Chinese American” and moderated the session “What Role Does Cultural Context Play? Explore and Examine the Family Value and Advancement of Mental Health and Resilience Around the World.”
College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences
Assistant Professor of Political Science Julien Labarre published “The Media, Technology, and Resentment in the 2024 US Election” for Hermès La Revue, a French journal on political communication.
Labarre also made multiple media appearances to discuss the election, including on Mediapart regarding the spread of falsehoods and misinformation online and on Swiss public television station RTS2 about Joe Biden’s speech following his election defeat. He also appeared on CBC Radio Canada for election night coverage, and on France 24 to discuss election results and Trump cabinet picks.
