CSUDH Names Scott Barrett Vice President for University Advancement

July 29, 2020

California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has named Scott Barrett as vice president of university advancement. He will begin his new position on August 24.

Barrett has been serving as associate dean for external affairs/chief advancement officer at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs since 2015.

The division’s extensive roster of departments and services includes Alumni Services, Ceremonies and Events, University Development, Government and Community Relations, and the CSUDH Philanthropic Foundation.

“Scott’s wealth of experience in education and the private sector will be a valuable asset as we work toward achieving our comprehensive growth objectives for the university,” said CSUDH President Thomas A. Parham. “For the Division of University Advancement, his strategic leadership will prove essential in helping move our institutional goals to the next level.”

Barrett brings more than 25 years of experience in all phases of university development to his new position, with an extensive and direct background in fundraising and related activities. In his current position at Syracuse University, Barrett and his team increased fundraising from $3.6 million to $15 million per year, while decreasing expenses by 25 percent. He led the communication, development, and alumni engagement operations at Maxwell, helping the school recapture its No.1 ranking in U.S. News and World Report.

“I am honored to be selected as the next vice president for University Advancement, serving on President Parham’s leadership team, and working with all Toros—faculty, staff, students, alumni, and a deeply dedicated philanthropic foundation board—to help CSUDH exceed its highest aspirations,” Barrett said. “CSUDH’s history of innovation and its deep commitment to broad access and transforming lives is highly motivating. Throughout the search, it was clear to me that the university has many advantages and is poised for remarkable growth and success in the years ahead.”

Prior to his current role at Syracuse University, Barrett served as assistant dean for advancement for the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. He has also served in top management positions at other campuses, including vice president of Institutional Advancement for Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York; director for annual giving at Hamilton College, a liberal arts college in Clinton, New York; and director of development at Bishop Grimes Prep, a high school in Syracuse.

In the private sector, Barrett has held the position of vice president for development at the Loretto Foundation, the largest long-term care provider in central New York state, and executive director/chief advancement officer for the New York-based non-profit Friends of Bassett Healthcare Network.

Barrett earned a Bachelor of Arts in government from Hamilton College.
