“A lack of knowledge means we all lose,” said University of California President Michael Drake at the April 15 Presidential Distinguished Lecture Series. During the event, titled “The Present and Future of Higher Education: Reflections on a Distinguished Career,” Dr. Drake repeatedly illustrated how higher education helps to build a better future.
As the 21st president of the University of California, Dr. Drake oversees UC’s world renowned system of 10 campuses, six academic health centers, and three nationally affiliated labs. He spoke about the trajectory of his own career in medicine, academia, and leadership, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and incredible advances he has witnessed thanks to academic and medical research.
“Investments in research are investments in our shared future,” he said.

Following these remarks, CSUDH President Dr. Thomas A. Parham led a conversation with Dr. Drake about the evolving landscape of higher education. They were later joined by Dr. Brenda Thames, Superintendent/President of El Camino College, and Dr. David Carlisle, President and CEO of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. The four presidents discussed how their cultural identities have shaped their leadership, gave advice to students, and shared their ideal visions for academia.
