California State University, Dominguez Hills senior Kylee Edgar is a guard for the Toros women’s basketball team. She helped the Toros reach the 2024-2025 NCAA Division II National Championship.
During the 2024-2025 season, Edgar averaged 10.7 minutes per game with no starts. Her contributions evolved this past season, averaging 23.3 minutes per game while making 16 starts.
A challenging moment for Edgar was transitioning into collegiate gameplay. While she had confidence in her playing abilities, she learned the importance of hard work and humility.
“I think what really got to me and the struggle that I’ve got was being on a team with a lot of great other players, including myself,” Edgar said. “I’m at different level and I’m not going to get as much playing time … and it was kind of like a reality check in a way.”
The Toros had been a contending program throughout the time Edgar had been there. She gained leadership skills from her older teammates.
In her early years, she did not speak up a lot. As she became an upperclassman, she began to hold her teammates accountable more. She also learned how to give her teammates grace when needed.
“Last year and especially this year, I’ve had to become more vocal and the coaches have asked a lot more,” Edgar said. “I’ve grown to be just more patient with people and I feel like they really gave me a way to lead.”
Edgar is a business major with an emphasis on marketing and advertising. She noted how the coaching staff would emphasize academics.
“We have these meetings with our coaches every week, just to meet about our grades and go over our grades to see how we’re doing,” Edgar said. “I feel like that helps with life overall.”
To balance academics and athletics, Edgar makes sure to make time for herself before doing schoolwork.
“I set a timer on my phone for five to 10 minutes and I open up my journal. I journal a lot because I feel like that helps me,” Edgar said. “I try to knock out most of my homework at the beginning of the week so that I don’t have to focus on it later in the week.”
Edgar aspires to play basketball overseas or work in the marketing field. She also wants a profession that keeps her in the sports world.
