Eager to network with peers while learning and sharing best practices, more than 400 PreK-12 teachers gathered at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) on July 29 for the second annual statewide Better Together: California Teachers Summit 2016. The California Teachers Summit is a partnership between the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, the California State University system, and the New Teacher Center. When 7th grader Noah Cabrera is not busy doing his homework, he can often be found stopping fire-setting villains by spinning violently in circles to create a funnel that extinguishes the flames. Noah Cabrera is Tornado Man. But even superheroes need mentors, and Tornado Man's mentor is Catman, who is there for him through thick and thin, much like the “huddle counselors” who have been there for Cabrera and the more than 300 other students who are attending Sharefest's Summer Youth Development Academy (YDA) July 11 through Aug. 5. Scholarship Program STEM Advantage Named Nonprofit Team of the Year by LA Business Journal
STEM Advantage, a nonprofit that has been supporting California State University, Dominguez Hills students since 2013, was named Nonprofit Team of the Year by the Los Angeles Business Journal. The newspaper presented the award on June 22 at its annual Nonprofit and Corporate Citizens Awards gala. STEM Advantage was one of 103 nominees and four finalists for the top honor. STEM Advantage seeks to address the employment needs facing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries in the United States, the nonprofit encourages young women and students from under-served communities to pursue careers in STEM fields. LaTeira Haynes, a graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills' (CSUDH) single subject credential program, has been named a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) 2015-16 “Rookie of the Year” teacher for her skill in preparing effective instruction and procedures, and providing a positive classroom learning environment for her students. Haynes, who was enrolled in CSUDH's Transition to Teaching program, follows in the footsteps of fellow Toros who have been honored recently for their teaching excellence.
