CSUDH Professor of History Bianca Murillo has received a 2022 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowship through the Awards for Faculty program for her next book, Financing Africa's Future: A Socio-Economic History of Ghana, 1950-1980. The highly competitive NEH faculty awards support advanced humanities research by scholars at Historically Black Colleges, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities. A total of 25 grants were awarded nationally. This is Murillo's second major project involving Ghana–her first book, Market Encounters: Consumer Cultures in Twentieth-Century Ghana was published in 2017. Student Research Day Highlights Toro Scholarship
Student Research Day (SRD), CSUDH's primary showcase of student research and scholarship, held its 17th annual competition on Feb. 16 and 17. Despite the obstacles presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a large cohort of Toro student researchers descended on Loker Student Union for the yearly event–with a smaller contingent participating virtually. Over 100 projects were presented in oral presentations or poster sessions. Of those, 28 were selected for honors at the Reception and Award Assembly that closed the event (see list below). CSUDH Receives Millions in Federal Department of Education Grants
Several impactful campus programs got a major boost recently, as California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) was awarded four grants from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). Together, the grants will provide millions of dollars in support for a host of innovative programs. GEAR UP Two of the DOE grants are for the GEAR UP program, which allows CSUDH to partner with local school districts, providing and supporting student success services at underserved middle and high schools. The new grants will allow CSUDH to partner with Compton Unified and Hawthorne Unified school districts. President Parham Honored as 100 Black Men of Los Angeles’ Man of the Year
For his leadership and advocacy, California State University, Dominguez Hills President Thomas A. Parham will be recognized as the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles' Man of the Year at their 40th annual gala, which will take place virtually on Oct. 23. The nonprofit organization, dedicated to improving the quality of life for Blacks and other underrepresented racial groups, will also honor Congresswoman Maxine Waters as their Lifetime Achievement Awardee and LA County Supervisor Holly J. CSUDH Alumni Scholarships Awarded to Largest Cohort
The California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Alumni Association awarded a record 16 students with scholarships for the 2021-22 school year, providing them with funds to help continue their education. The recipients include 7 graduate and 9 undergraduate students–all carefully chosen for the scholarships, which are given annually to students with strong academic records and service to the university and their communities.
