Human Geography: Earth Science Club Participates in L.A. Homeless Census

While students majoring in geography and geology usually study physical properties of the earth, those in the Department of Earth Sciences at California State University, Dominguez Hills are examining the impact of human needs and man-made effects upon the planet. Last month, members of the Earth Science Club participated in the biannual homeless count sponsored by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). The club’s president, Daniel Pearlman, says that the earth and environment major has “a lot of focus on interactions with people. As the new director of philanthropy and community involvement at Southern California Edison (SCE), Tammy Tumbling (Class of ’90, B.S., business administration; ’94, MPA) is responsible for overseeing the company’s philanthropic interests and strategizing funding programs and priorities. Among these is Edison’s commitment to educating a “green” workforce through its $1,000,000 Green Jobs Education Initiative, which was conceived and launched by Tumbling earlier this year. CSU Dominguez Hills Launches Ridesharing Network

California State University, Dominguez Hills has partnered with Zimride to launch a social network for ridesharing. This free and private network for CSU Dominguez Hills students, faculty and staff empowers them to join together toward creating a more sustainable community. “We are excited about this partnership with Zimride, and the commuting opportunities it provides,” said Cynthia Jones-Hunter, CSU Dominguez Hills transportation coordinator. “Zimride’s solution is appealing to the entire campus, and will help us to reduce traffic on and around campus.” The Zimride platform uses Facebook integration to create a fun way to find individuals within the CSU Dominguez Hills community of ...
