Even as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been upending the campus community's lives over the past few weeks, the staff of CSUDH's Student Health and Psychological Services have been working tirelessly to ensure that they remain open and available to those in need of help. “We're still here!” says Irina Gaal, chief of medical services, who has been one of the leaders of their effort to keep services running. “While some things are still a bit up in the air, we are rapidly transitioning to a tele-health model that allows us to continue to help our patients.” The center's psychological services have completely transitioned to a remote model. O&P Society Raises Funds for Physically Challenged Boy to Compete in Triathlon
The Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) Society student organization at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) made it possible for 12-year-old Zion Redington, who has ectrodactyly and was born with one finger on each hand and one toe on each foot, to compete in 25th Annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge Oct. 19-21 in La Jolla, Calif. The O&P Society raised $2,000 for Zion and his mother, Heather Redington-Whitlock, to fly from their home in Franklin, Tenn., to La Jolla, and to register Zion in the triathlon. Graduate Tiffany Hall Finds an Angel in Uniform
There was a time when Tiffany Hall did all she could to avoid Long Beach Police Officer Jim Foster, even frantically knocking on the door of a stranger's home pleading “Help me, the police are coming. Can I go out your back door?” She got away, that time. Run-ins with Foster were the norm for Hall in the early 2000s when she was on the streets and addicted to crack cocaine and PCP, but the usual outcome placed her in handcuffs cursing and pleading to be released from the back of his cruiser on the way to the police station. O&P Students Offer First Dance and Swim to those with Disabilities
With help from students in California State University, Dominguez Hills' (CSUDH) Orthotics and Prosthetics Department, O&P patients learned to better manage their functional limitations in a fun and active way during First Dance and First Swim adaptive clinics on March 16-17. The O&P Society, the O&P Department's student organization, held the clinics in partnership with the Orthotic and Prosthetic Activities Foundation (OPAF) to offer those with amputations, limb differences, and other physical disabilities the opportunity to learn or relearn to dance and swim with the help of skilled instructors and adaptive equipment.
