President Willie J. Hagan, Student Asia Watkins Honored During Black History Month Celebration

CSUDH celebrates Black History Month at the Marriott Torrance Redondo Beach where President Dr. Hagan and grad student Asia Watkins were honored for their achievements.

California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) President Willie J. Hagan was presented the Leadership & Community Commitment Award at the Torrance Chamber of Commerce’s and the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce’s 20th Annual Black History Month Celebration on Feb. 24 at the Torrance Marriott. The celebration honors the contributions of the many African Americans who “span our nation’s past, present, and future,” have “made a difference on the world stage,” and have changed lives in South Bay communities. “Anytime that you get an award like this you know it wasn’t achieved by you as an individual. CSU Dominguez Hills Student Betty Solares Receives CSU Trustees’ Award

Bertha (Betty) Solares, a human services major and sociology minor at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), has endured much in her life: an abusive mother, teen pregnancy, an abusive husband, drug addiction, and depression. At her lowest point she was living on the streets, had lost custody of her child, and wound up in jail twice. When Solares learned she was pregnant with her second daughter, she made the decision to turn her life around. Today, Solares carries a 3.6 GPA at CSUDH, and she is not letting her troubled past cripple her. Instead, she is using it as her inspiration to help and serve others. Human Services students help connect veterans and employers at job fair

The Cal State Dominguez Hills’ (CSUDH) Human Services Student Association (HSSA) will be spending part of their winter break doing one of the key principles of their major, helping others. In particular, HSSA members will be helping to connect veterans with the right employers during the Veterans Job Fair at the StubHub Center on Jan. 3, 2016. The job fair, which takes place from noon to 5 p.m., is being coordinated by the StubHub Center in conjunction with the Marine Corp Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, a national high school football camp series and bowl game. Pablo Portillo to receive ‘Student Civic Engagement Award’ at Founders’ Dinner

“It never hurts to lend a helping hand,” or get your hands dirty when it comes to assisting others, according to Pablo Portillo, a human services major at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). Portillo, a senior who plans to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in spring 2016, is driven by his desire to help others, particularly those from underserved communities. Kaiser Internship Offers Kinesiology Students Unique Experience

Nicole Chambers and Wendy Barrios, seniors studying kinesiology at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), will have a significant advantage when applying for post-graduate healthcare programs, and invaluable work experience that is often hard to acquire at the undergraduate level. The students, who both are earning their Bachelors of Arts in Physical Education, with the pre-physical therapy option, at CSUDH, were chosen as the first recipients of the new Kaiser Permanente Mobility Technician Internship, which was launched in the fall 2014.
