California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has received a $1.6 million gift to create an endowment that will support historic and innovative research, preservation, and performance activities hosted by the new Center for African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians, located in CSUDH's College of Arts and Humanities. The gift was donated by the Georgia and Nolan Payton Foundation. The music of Teodross Avery, jazz saxophonist and assistant professor of jazz studies and contemporary music at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), has been included among many of the genre's most celebrated musicians in jazz critic Scott Yanow's compilation of “The Top Jazz Recordings of 2019.” Yanow, who grew up in Los Angeles, is considered one of the music industry's most respected writers.
