Evidence shows that patterns of inequity in physics drive talented women out of the field. Here's what physicists can do to overcome them. In a seminar for teaching assistants, one male and one female TA stand up; the professor in charge tells the room that the male TA will get more respect from students. A woman talks to her undergraduate adviser about her desire for a PhD in physics; he replies, “You know physics is hard. Are you sure you want to try to do that?” A physics major asks a senior male professor for advice on getting into a good doctoral program; he suggests that she flirt more at conferences. In his letters of recommendation for students applying to graduate school, a ... Read More

Cal State Dominguez Hills Honors the Old with New Fab Lab
As subtle as it may be, there's a profound difference between A. Quincy Jones and the Quincy Jones. Though both made their names producing creative work in '60s-era Los Angeles, the latter is a music producer who worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, and the former is an architect known for, among other ventures, the original design of California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). One of these talented fellows recently had a “fab lab” integrated into their oeuvre, and here's a hint – it's not going to win a Grammy. The new Toyota Center Fab Lab at CSUDH, however, might still win awards despite being theoretically undanceable. Thanks to the efforts of the Los Angeles office of ... Read More
Research Scholars Achieve First Place at SACNAS Conference
California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) research scholars Chad Thomas and Adrianna Perez took first place for their poster presentations at the Society for the Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Conference from Oct. 19 to 21 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The conference is considered one of the largest annual gatherings of minority scientists in the country. Thomas, a cell and molecular biology major and a Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) scholar, presented his research “NMR Methods in the Structure Elucidation of Bioactive Alkaloids from Mostuea brunonis.” Perez, a ... Cal State Dominguez Hills Starts $82M Innovation Center
Officials at California State University-Dominguez Hills are building an $82 million science center now under construction as a boon to students at the campus in Carson as well as L.A.'s growing tech sector. The three-story, 91,000-square foot instructional and research building, which broke ground late last month, will include more than 30 classrooms and labs, all geared toward training students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is slated to open at the end of the fall 2019 semester. “With Silicon Beach, the region's burgeoning focus on entrepreneurial and business mentorship, and our growth as a top biotechnology hub, Los Angeles is experiencing ... CSUDH and Toyota Unveil State-of-the-Art Mobile Fab Labs
Nearly 100 middle and high school students joined members of the California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) campus community for a festive gathering on Sept. 27 to unveil the university's new mobile fabrication laboratory (mobile fab lab), the first in a fleet of four that are now part of the Fab Foundation network of nearly 900 such labs around the globe. The fabs labs are designed to expand K-12 students' skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, and provide teachers and CSUDH credential students with additional tools and teaching techniques to engage and excite students into STEM. The first labs will begin touring schools in the Los Angeles ... Read More
