CSU Dominguez Hills’ Commitment to Sustainability Planted on Earth Day 2014

The Eighth Annual Earth Day at California State University, Dominguez Hills on April 22 kicked off with food, fun and a commitment to develop and grow the university as a leader in environmental sustainability. Rod Hay, dean of College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences—who is also director of the university’s Center for Urban Environmental Research (CUER)—read a letter from University President Dr. Willie J. Hagan, who wholeheartedly agreed to participate in eco-friendly efforts, including the Sustainability Circle and the Green Campus Commitment. Pow Wow Brings Culture, Traditions of Native Americans to Campus

On Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21, the California State University, Dominguez Hills Pow Wow took place in the campus Sculpture Garden and featured exhibitions of traditional songs and dances performed by men and women in colorful and elaborate tribal regalia, as well as social dancing, singing and drumming, flute music, arts and crafts, and food. University Students Provide Preschoolers a Jumpstart on Education

Curious, giggling 3- to 5-year-olds joined hands for a snake dance, touched eagle feathers and fur, and listened in awe to tales told by an American Indian in full regalia. Others had their first-ever romp in the snow. These types of enrichment experiences are part of a broader set of learning opportunities offered to children at three Compton preschools through the Jumpstart program at California State University, Dominguez Hills. CSU Dominguez Hills Recognized Nationally for Community Service

California State University, Dominguez Hills was named as a finalist for the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Presidential Award. A national program by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes the efforts of institutions to engage students in meaningful, measurable service in the communities their university serves. University Partners with Historic Adobe Museum for NEH Teacher Workshops

Eighty elementary and high school teachers from across the United States spent a week in June at California State University, Dominguez Hills and the nearby Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum (DRAM) learning about the people and cultures that shaped the Los Angeles region in order to enhance their teaching of American history in the classroom.
