Thalia Gomez: ASI President Focuses on Student Services to Support Academic Excellence

Thalia Gomez says that when she began attending California State University, Dominguez Hills, she had no idea what a Ph.D. was. Today, as president of Associated Students, Inc., she is working to ensure that students have access to the guidance and support she has received during her education at CSU Dominguez Hills that has empowered her to become a scholar and leader. “I’m a first generation college student,” says the Chicana/o studies major. “My first language wasn’t even English. Sisters United: Mentorship Program for Black Female Students in Fifth Year

From its beginnings in 2005 as a small discussion group for black female students residing in campus housing, Sisters United has grown to encompass the needs of all African and African American female students at California State University, Dominguez Hills. By facilitating one-on-one mentorships with faculty or staff members, the program has been instrumental in ensuring the success of students by helping them balance maintaining academic excellence with all other aspects of their lives. Univision’s Feria Es El Momento, Edúcate Brings Thousands to CSU Dominguez Hills

Univision Los Angeles brought its education fair, “Feria Es El Momento, Edúcate” to California State University, Dominguez Hills for a second year on Oct. 9. The event featured exhibitors from all levels of elementary, secondary, and higher education, as well as representatives of Chivas USA, health care organizations and other supplementary educational programs. The event was sponsored by Univision KMEX 34, Telefutura 46, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, CommuniCard, and CSU Dominguez Hills. An estimated 27,000 visitors walked through the CSU Dominguez Hills Torodome during the five-hour event, which provided free information and resources for parents who inquired about ... Read More

Tri-Carson: Inaugural Event to Introduce CSU Dominguez Hills and City of Carson to Triathlete Community

The first Tri-Carson, a reverse triathlon that consists of a 5K run, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 200-meter swim will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills and surrounding streets just east of the university. The event, which is co-sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, is presented by the City of Carson, the Carson Chamber of Commerce, and CSU Dominguez Hills. Many of the retired or semi-retired members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University, Dominguez Hills will undoubtedly see themselves reflected in “Songs for the Second Half,” by Barry Bortnick. A performance of the one-act musical will take place on Oct. 10 in the Recital Hall, Rm. A-103, in La Corte Hall. “‘Songs for the Second Half’ deals with themes that OLLI members will find familiar, especially as they look at retirement, other transitions in their lives and the goals they want to set for the ‘second half,’” says Jim Bouchard, coordinator of OLLI at CSUDH. “The musical has a very positive message about being productive and happy in the second ...
