CSUDH is proud to present Lynn Nottage’s Sweat, a searing and timely exploration of friendship, loyalty, and the disintegration of the American working class. Directed by Kelly Herman, performances will be held at the University Theatre from Dec. 3-6 at 7:00 PM, with a matinee performance on Friday, Dec. 5 at 1:00 PM.
Set in the once-thriving steel town of Reading, Pennsylvania, Sweat tells the story of lifelong friends bonded by years of factory work, beer, and shared dreams. But when the economy shifts in the wake of globalization and corporate downsizing, deep fractures begin to surface. Promotions turn into betrayals. Job security becomes a memory. And the foundation of their community begins to crumble.
Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Sweat is a powerfully human tale that examines race, immigration, class, and the impact of deindustrialization in America delivered with Nottage’s unflinching honesty, signature wit, and emotional depth.
“Sweat shines a light on humanity behind the headlines. These characters are complex, flawed, and deeply real. I hope audiences walk away seeing themselves and each other more clearly,” said director Kelly Herman.
Sweat is more than a play. It’s a visceral experience that lays bare the human cost of economic instability and reminds us how easily the bonds that hold us together can be stretched to the breaking point.
Tickets to Sweat are $12 for students and $20 for General Admission. Tickets may be purchased for in-person experience at www.csudh.edu/theatre/tickets. Performances will take place in the University Theatre, located on the CSUDH campus, 1000 E. Victoria St. For driving directions and a map of campus, visit www.csudh.edu/directions.
