Student Research Day Showcases Scholarship and Mentorship

Now in its 13th year, Student Research Day (SRD) has become an institution at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), and a widely-anticipated showcase of the analytical and creative vigor demonstrated each year by the university’s budding researchers. Close to 220 oral and poster presentations were delivered during SRD on Feb. 14 and 15, covering a wide range of academic disciplines at the university, from history to health, business to biology, Chicana/o studies to computer science. New Student Success Centers Open Their Doors

Students looking for academic advising or other support now have a new place to go on campus—five new places, in fact. CSUDH advising options that used to be centered in the University Advisement Center (UAC) are now divided up among the five colleges, with new Student Success Centers opening their doors for the Winter 2023 semester. “These new centers are meant to be extremely collaborative, and have a focus on holistic student support,” says Andrew Drummond, associate vice president for academic advising and career development. “Our new model recognizes that it takes the whole campus to support the whole student. Nnamdi Okafor, executive director of strategic engagement and resource acquisition for CSUDH’s Office of the President, wakes up each morning inspired by the joy he gets from his work. Although he’s only been at CSUDH about two years, Okafor has been working in various philanthropic endeavors since his days attending CSU Fullerton. He continues to get a charge out of helping others each and every day. Toro Makes an Impact as Youth Commissioner

At 23, CSUDH junior Ricardo Ortega Martinez Jr. is already a veteran in California politics. “My advocacy and community organizing started at the age of 17,” says Martinez, a political science major whose early experience with foster care growing up in Huntington Park helped shape the focus of his current advocacy work. Martinez serves as youth commissioner for California’s 5th District, which encompasses much of Antelope Valley and northeastern Los Angeles County. The Youth Commission was established in September 2021 by the Board of Supervisors to promote involvement by young people in public policy decisions. Source: Insight into Diversity To address the shortage of health care professionals in the state and promote diversity in health education, the California Department of Health Care Access and Information recently invested nearly $41 million across more than 20 higher education institutions and organizations through the Health Professions Pathways Program (HPPP). Students from CSUDH’s art and design department welcomed celebrated artist Lauren Halsey to campus this week for a wide-ranging discussion about her approach to art, her creative process, and the importance of community in an event co-hosted by the University Art Gallery and the PRAXIS Community Engagement Program. Halsey’s work has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the gallery since March. Sitting among the signage, collages, and sculpture that make up the exhibition, the artist characterized her work as “love letters” or “moments of meaning” gathered over many years.
