California State University, Dominguez Hills strives to be a good steward to the environment, and on the occasion of Earth Day, below are just a few of the green projects currently implemented on campus to improve our carbon footprint and be more sustainable. Recycling In 2013 alone, the campus recycled nearly 200,000 pounds of paper, plastic, glass, cardboard and cans, approximately 34,000 pounds more than 2012. In addition, the university's recycle program now recycles green waste, construction and demolition debris, concrete and dirt, electronic waste, ink and toner cartridges, scrap metal and wood pallets. The Eighth Annual Earth Day at California State University, Dominguez Hills on April 22 kicked off with food, fun and a commitment to develop and grow the university as a leader in environmental sustainability. Rod Hay, dean of College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences–who is also director of the university's Center for Urban Environmental Research (CUER)–read a letter from University President Dr. Willie J. Hagan, who wholeheartedly agreed to participate in eco-friendly efforts, including the Sustainability Circle and the Green Campus Commitment. Research Students Attend American Chemical Society Undergraduate Research Conference
California State University, Dominguez Hills was well-represented at the 32nd Annual Southern California Undergraduate Research Conference in Chemistry and Biochemistry (SCURCCB), hosted by Concordia University in Irvine, on April 12. A conference of the Southern California Section of the American Chemical Society, SCURCCB gives undergraduate students in chemical sciences at universities in the southern California region an opportunity to not only present their own research, but sit in on posters and talks of their peers. Groundsmen Turn Erosion Problem into Tiny Village on Campus
The winding walkway between the University Theatre and the Student Health Center has always been a lush, calming spot on campus, a place where people stop to enjoy the shade and tranquility. Now the path offers one more reason to stop. If you didn't know any better, you might think that a group of elves had discovered the spot too and decided to call it home. Tiny houses have popped up, as standalone dwellings, or tree houses, signified by colorful little doors in the trees, or as Hobbit-style houses embedded in rock.
