Students from CSUDH's art and design department welcomed celebrated artist Lauren Halsey to campus this week for a wide-ranging discussion about her approach to art, her creative process, and the importance of community in an event co-hosted by the University Art Gallery and the PRAXIS Community Engagement Program. Halsey's work has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the gallery since March. Sitting among the signage, collages, and sculpture that make up the exhibition, the artist characterized her work as “love letters” or “moments of meaning” gathered over many years. Amber Riley Shares Struggles, Triumphs at Presidential Distinguished Lecture Series
Vulnerability is power. That was one of the key messages imparted by Amber Riley, the featured speaker for CSUDH's Presidential Distinguished Lecture Series on November 30. Riley, a Grammy-nominated singer, award-winning actor, producer, and author, spoke candidly about her personal journey of self-care and mental wellbeing, as well as the tools and lessons that have helped her along the way. Sulaiman Bah Named West Region Player of the Year
After helping to lead the CSUDH men's soccer team to their best season in years, Toro sophomore midfielder Sulaiman Bah won the Division II Conference Commissioners Association West Region Player of the Year for the 2022 season. He became the first CSUDH player to win the award. Bah finished the season with 18 goals and 12 assists, establishing a new CSUDH single-season scoring record. Seven of his goals were match-winners, which ranked first among all players in NCAA Division II. CSUDH Receives $5.3 Million to Address Digital Divide in the South Bay
The CSUDH Workforce Integration Network (WIN) has been awarded $5.3 million through the National Telecommunication and Information Administration's Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program (CMC). The funds will support “Closing the Digital Divide with CSUDH-WIN,” an innovative outreach effort which connects CSUDH students with partnering organizations to provide training, equipment, and technology resources to members of the community. CSUDH is one of only 19 institutions awarded CMC grants to date, and one of only three in Southern California. College of Education Awarded $2.57 Million Grant
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the College of Education a five-year, $2.571 million grant in support of Project MEDALLA (Multilingual Educator Development Advancing Language Learning Achievement/Activism), which aims to create a network of certified bilingual educators in the greater Los Angeles area. Until the 2016 passing of the Multilingual Education Act in California, English immersion classes had been required for English learners in the state. Now, by law, schools must provide dual language programs if requested by enough parents.
