Staff Spotlight: Mario Villegas, Custodian, Facilities Services

April 27, 2022 By Kandis Newman

Mario VillegasCustodian Mario Villegas has been with CSUDH Facilities Services for almost seven years, contributing to keeping the campus looking great on a daily basis. As someone who says he “loves to learn something new every day,” Villegas is proud to work on campus and “be part of a community where people are encouraged to get an education.”

In his position at CSUDH, Villegas is responsible for keeping his assigned area of the campus ship-shape. Whether he’s cleaning classrooms or restrooms, or making sure the carpets are cleaned and vacuumed and trash is picked up, Villegas knows that he’s making vital contributions toward creating a safe and healthy environment for the Toro community. “I do the best job I can every day, and it makes me proud because I enjoy making people happy.”

Villegas enjoys working at CSUDH because of its “community feel,” and loves the interactions he has with fellow Toro staff and students throughout the day. He appreciates the praise he gets from faculty and staff for his service, and says he wouldn’t switch jobs with anyone on campus. “I love what I do!” he replies.

When he’s not on campus, Villegas likes to work on home improvement projects “to please my wife” – an attitude that proves he definitely is learning something every day! He enjoys watching all kinds of movies, and says that if they made a film about his life, he would choose Nicolas Cage to play the lead role.

Before getting hired at CSUDH, Villegas’ favorite job was working as a chef–for the same reasons he loves working on campus: “I was interesting, and it always feels good to please people and make them happy.”

Villegas has found CSUDH to be an open and welcoming work environment, and is excited about the future of the campus. “It’s really special to be part of the Toro community, and to see it grow and thrive after all these years.”

Staff Spotlight: Paola Carbajal-Kerr

March 3, 2022 By Kandis Newman

Paola CarbajalWhen Paola Carbajal-Kerr says, “I’m proud to be a Toro,” she means it. The CSUDH alumna and current residential life coordinator for University Housing has been studying or working on campus for 15 years–she joined the Toro staff right after graduating from the university.

“I worked in Student Affairs as an undergraduate student programmer for the Multicultural Center (now Multicultural Affairs),” she says. “I had so many great mentors at the time that I decided to join their ranks in helping to support students!”

In her current position, Carbajal-Kerr leads the programmatic efforts for students living in the Residence Hall, as well as supervising the work of the student staff in the building. A huge music fan, her busy days are always accompanied by “the sounds of my diverse and random Spotify music library.” The best parts of her day are the interactions she has with her resident assistants and students.

“Being of service and mentorship to my students brings me so much joy,” she says. “I know that my attentiveness and guidance is helping them feel connected and rooted to CSUDH, which allows them to be successful students and leaders.”

For Carbajal-Kerr, “What makes DH so special is the love the employees have for this campus, and our diversity. Our community is unique and nothing like I have seen anywhere else. The campus is a great representation of the community we serve–students can see reflections of themselves in the employees and administration.”

Prior to her stint at CSUDH, Carbajal-Kerr’s most memorable job was as a costumer at a large costume shop. “I got to help people dress up in all sorts of costumes, all year round,” she remembers. “I had access to famous theme park costumes, historic period pieces, pop culture outfits, and awesome make-up. We used to dress up while on the job!”

When not on campus, Carbajal-Kerr enjoys spending time with her husband (fellow Toro student-turned-staffer Mark Kerr) and their two cats, and says that pre-COVID, comic conventions were among her favorite pastimes. She also creates and design resin art and nail art. “Recently, I’ve taken to building Gunpla, which are fun robot models from the Japanese amine brand Gundam,” she adds.

“I am so proud of being a Toro,” she says. “I was educated here and now work here during a time of great transformation on campus. I am proud to say that I helped establish and continue to grow our residential program.”

Staff Spotlight: Teddy the Toro

January 19, 2022 By Hillary Griffin

Teddy posing on the North Lawn

Teddy the Toro has been high-stepping across campus for over two decades, spreading Toro spirit and encouragement at just about every event that takes place at CSUDH. A typical day for the “#1 Mascot in California” starts off with a quick check of their Instagram messages, followed by “meeting with campus squirrels for the latest updates.” The rest of their day is spent walking around campus, “checking in with my Toros,” according to Teddy.

For Teddy, the best part of the job is “bringing laughter, joy, hope, and spirit to everyone.” The self-proclaimed “most likable figure on campus,” Teddy’s proudest moments have been representing CSUDH at national mascot competitions in 2019 and 2020–the only California-based mascot to do so. They are still working on their ultimate goal of getting a life-size Teddy statue built on campus, but even without such a tribute, Teddy considers the gig to be “the best job on campus.”
