Toro Paralympian Seeks Gold in the City of Light
Some 4,400 athletes from 168 delegations joined the Parade of Nations in the Place de la Concorde on Aug. 28 to mark the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, and a proud graduate of CSUDH’s certificate program in orthotics and prosthetics walked among them. Para canoeist Jillian Elwart, 41, will make her Paralympic debut at the Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on Sept. 6. Her event is a 200m sprint in a Va’a, an outrigger-style canoe fitted with a float on one side. For Martha Bretado and Rachel Kroener, the field of prosthetics is about much more than creating new artificial limbs for patients. As people who have physical disabilities themselves, the two students understand the importance of fostering community with their patients, building up their confidence, and showing them life's full range of possibilities. O&P Society Raises Funds for Physically Challenged Boy to Compete in Triathlon
The Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) Society student organization at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) made it possible for 12-year-old Zion Redington, who has ectrodactyly and was born with one finger on each hand and one toe on each foot, to compete in 25th Annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge Oct. 19-21 in La Jolla, Calif. The O&P Society raised $2,000 for Zion and his mother, Heather Redington-Whitlock, to fly from their home in Franklin, Tenn., to La Jolla, and to register Zion in the triathlon. Mark Muller Named New Chair of Orthotics and Prosthetics Department
Mark Muller, CPO, FAAOP, MS, has been named the new chair of the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), Dean Gary Sayed of the College of Health, Human Services, and Nursing announced. Muller joined CSUDH in 2006, and immediately went to work developing new curricula in gait and biomechanics, along with working to upgrade all course objectives. Prior to CSUDH, Muller worked in private practice in San Diego, served as education manager for Ossur Americas, and taught at Northwestern University P&O Center.
