California State University, Dominguez Hills has been awarded a multimillion dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement's School Leadership Program (SLP). More than $13 million of first-year funding was awarded for fiscal year 2013 to 20 educational institutions nationwide to support projects designed to recruit, train, and mentor principals and assistant principals for high-need schools and districts. More than 77 students got resume advice during the Career Center's Resume Clinic on Thursday, Oct. 17. The center tried a new format this year, and scheduled students in two sessions. Each session included a resume writing workshops led by Sherron Hawkins of Enterprise Holdings followed by group critiques in which two to five students sat with one of the 13 employer volunteers as he or she gave an evaluation of each students' resume. According to student population data for the California State University system, more than 70 percent of CSU students and their families would be eligible for Medi-Cal or government subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the federal healthcare reform law commonly referred to as ObamaCare that requires that all legal U.S. residents have health insurance by Jan. 1, 2014 or pay a penalty. Like so many children, as a boy Salvador Valdez (Class of '09, B.S., health science, community health; '12 M.A., education, counseling) wanted to become a doctor when he grew up. Intending to go to medical school, he began his freshman year at California State University, Dominguez Hills, majoring in biology.
