CSUDH Interim President Mary Ann Villarreal introduced herself to educational, political, business, and spiritual leaders from across the South Bay at a community breakfast on Jan. 15. The event served as the official kick-off of her tenure as president.

“I believe deeply in collaboration, in people working together and bringing out the best in one another,” said Villarreal. “That approach is vital at an institution like CSUDH.”

Villarreal touched on her own upbringing in a small Texas town and shared that she, like many Toros, was the first in her family to graduate from college. She reflected on her university studies, time spent in the Air Force Reserve, and early academic career, saying, “These experiences taught me the value of investing in the people around you.”

She went on to describe her leadership philosophy, telling the audience, “True strength doesn’t come from standing alone or holding power tightly, but from using it responsibly, collectively, and in the service of others. That is how I hope to lead here at CSUDH.”

“Strengthening ties and building new ones between CSUDH and the South Bay is vital to our present and our future. Together, we can lift students, families, and communities, and show what it truly means to lead with purpose.”

Hosted by Derrick Mims, Interim AVP of External Relations, the breakfast was held on the fifth floor of the University Library. Other speakers included Robert Dorame, Tribal Chair of the Gabrielino Tongva Indians of California, “Pastor Tony” Lopez of the Alive Church of San Pedro, Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes, Carson City Councilmember Jawane Hilton, and civic leader Rose Ibanez.

Former CSUDH President Thomas Parham provided his own remarks, reflecting on his tenure and helping to introduce Villarreal to CSUDH community partners and stakeholders.

He touched on the importance of the Toro Community standing behind the interim president. “Please give President Villarreal the same support that you gave me when I arrived on campus eight years ago,” he concluded.

The speaking program concluded with a short benediction from Rev. Leon Wood, then President Villarreal took time to introduce herself personally and chat with attendees.
