June 13, 2014

California State University, Dominguez Hills Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Ellen Junn has announced the appointments of two academic leadership positions: Gitanjali Kaul as associate vice president for institutional effectiveness and assessment, and Clare Weber, associate vice president for faculty affairs.

“These two position are vitally important to ensuring this institution continues to provide the highest quality education,” Provost Junn said. “CSU Dominguez Hills will certainly benefit from the expertise of Dr. Kaul and Dr. Weber.”

As associate vice president for institutional effectiveness and assessment, Kaul will lead the university’s institutional research office that provides the information necessary to make data-driven decisions in the areas of program planning, enrollment management in academic affairs, assessment and long-range academic affairs strategic planning. She begins her new position in August.

Kaul comes to CSU Dominguez Hills from Florida Atlantic University (FAU), where she has served as vice president of strategic planning since 2010, during which time FAU doubled its freshman applications and successfully completed a two-year effort to reaffirm its accreditation with the Southern Association of College and Schools. She has also been vice provost for planning, assessment and information resource management at Cleveland State University and associate provost for academic assessment and institution research at Ohio University.

A native of New Delhi, India, Kaul received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Delhi and master’s in psychology from Utkal University in Orissa, India. Her doctorate in educational psychology and master’s in sociology come from Northern Illinois University.

“I am absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to join California State University, Dominguez Hills,” Kaul said. “This is a special honor and I am very enthusiastic about joining Provost Junn’s team. I look forward to contributing all I can to support the university’s mission.”

In the position of associate vice president for faculty affairs, Weber oversees the process of faculty recruitment, tenure, retention and promotion, faculty personnel policies and governance. She had served as interim associate vice president for faculty affairs since January and began as the permanent AVP at the end of May.

Weber joined CSU Dominguez Hills in 2002 as assistant professor of sociology. She has served as department chair, coordinator of the women’s studies program, as a member of the Academic Senate, and on numerous campus committees and task forces.

“It is an honor and a privilege to continue to serve CSUDH in my new role as AVP of Faculty Affairs,” Weber said. “Our campus community deserves nothing but the best and I will work hard to play my part.”

Prior to her academic career, she was a human rights investigator in Central America during the civil wars of the 1980s, regional coordinator for the international human rights organization Witness for Peace, and coordinated a campaign to legalize street vending in Los Angeles. She has consulted with nonprofit organizations on program evaluation and strategic planning both locally and internationally.

Weber has a doctorate in social relations from the University of California, Irvine, a master’s in Latin American studies from CSU Los Angeles, and a bachelor’s in sociology and Spanish from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. She was chair of the International Committee of Sociologists for Women in Society and currently serves on the advisory board to the Long Beach-based Comunidades Con Poder Para el Cambio and as a member of the editorial collective of the international journal Latin American Perspectives.
