Nearly 250 visitors from throughout California, including State Senator Rod Wright, and Assemblymembers Bonnie Lowenthal (CA-54th) and Diane Harkley (CA-73rd), attended a half-day Cap and Trade Forum co-hosted by Assemblymembers Isadore Hall, III (CA-52nd) and Susan Bonilla (CA-11th) on Friday at California State University, Dominguez Hills in the Loker Student Union.
The legislators and experts discussed the implications of the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Cap and Trade program that is set to regulate 600 of the state’s largest greenhouse gas emitting stationary sources. The program was enacted to comply with the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006.
In his welcome, University President Willie Hagan said, “As the new president, one my goals is to ensure that Dominguez Hills… is regularly seen as necessary to the debate and part of the solution on the core issues that face our state and this nation. Bringing together leading experts to discuss the implementation and implications of Cap and Trade regulations is of critical importance. As a university, physically we are only a mile from the Alameda Corridor. Within ten miles of this campus there are least 70-80 oil refinery and distribution centers, and we are just a few miles of the two most important ports in the United States. It is safe to say, that our campus is located at the epicenter of this issue.”
