Even as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been upending the campus community's lives over the past few weeks, the staff of CSUDH's Student Health and Psychological Services have been working tirelessly to ensure that they remain open and available to those in need of help. “We're still here!” says Irina Gaal, chief of medical services, who has been one of the leaders of their effort to keep services running. “While some things are still a bit up in the air, we are rapidly transitioning to a tele-health model that allows us to continue to help our patients.” The center's psychological services have completely transitioned to a remote model. CSUDH Awarded Nearly $1.3 Million to Develop Faculty Learning Communities
California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has been awarded a $1,294,133 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop faculty learning communities that will support STEM faculty to explore and implement equity-minded, evidence-based teaching and leadership practices that are rooted in the science of learning. Women in STEM Career Day Draws Hundreds of High School Students
Nearly 500 female high school students visited California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) on Feb. 21 to learn about the numerous opportunities waiting for them in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) workforce during Women in STEM Career Day 2020. The event was hosted by EXP, a nonprofit organization that helps schools in the Southern California region deliver innovative, career-based curriculum. A long-standing partner with CSUDH, EXP has hosted its annual GPS Your Future STEM career fair on campus for a number of years, and each year CSUDH participates in EXP's internship program for local high school students. Campus Community Comes Together to Elevate Student Researchers
Nearly three dozen students received top honors for their scholarly research and creative activity during California State University, Dominguez Hills' (CSUDH) 15th Annual Student Research Day (SRD) competition on Feb. 12 and 13. Since 2005, the highly anticipated showcase of comprehensive faculty mentorship and student achievement has brought together the campus community, and an enthusiastic group of volunteers. CSUDH Volunteers Provide Free Tax Assistance for Students and Low-Income Clients
Students and others in need of help this tax season have a great resource right here on the CSUDH campus - the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, staffed by Toro students. The no-cost tax preparation service is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) program open to any individuals whose 2019 income was less than $56,000. It is designed to provide assistance to low-income citizens, students, the elderly, disabled, and those with limited English proficiency. In 2019, VITA volunteers helped file over 300 returns, and that number is expected to increase this year.
