Es El Momento Spanish-Language Education Fair Returns to Campus for Fifth Year

On Saturday, Oct. 5, California State University, Dominguez Hills will welcome thousands of Spanish-speaking families to campus for the fifth annual Educación: Feria Es El Momento from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fair is part of a long-term education campaign led by Spanish-language television network Univision to increase the involvement of Spanish-speaking parents in their children’s education, reduce the Latino dropout rate, and promote a college-going culture—all issues that are very important to this university, as well. CSU Dominguez Hills has partnered with Univision and its Los Angeles Station KMEX to put on Educación: Feria Es El Momento for the past five years. It is the largest Hispanic education fair in Southern California, with an estimated 55,000 parents and their K-12 children expected to attend this year.

Beginning with an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m., the fair invites parents and students to learn, in a higher education setting, about the many educational possibilities in California. It features more than 80 nonprofit educational and community resource organizations, school districts, and universities throughout southern California, whose representatives will inform and guide parents.

In addition, there will be free workshops throughout the day on such topics as financial aid, scholarships and financial literacy, college admission requirements, the role of parents in their child’s education, and AB 540; a reading garden featuring local politicians and KMEX personalities reading to children; 50,000 children books given away; a “visualization” booth where children can try on graduation gowns or uniforms of certain professions and have their picture taken; live entertainment on an outside stage; vendor booths; and a town hall on immigration reform. All events are free.
