University’s OSHA Training Center Awarded Exclusive Contract

May 7, 2012

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Training Institute Education Center (TIEC) at California State University, Dominguez Hills has recently been awarded a sole source contract with the Inspections Division of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to provide safety training for employees constructing the $1.5 billion expansion of the Tom Bradley International Terminal  at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

According to Jason Vogel, director of the Center for Training and Development in the College of Extended and International Education at CSU Dominguez Hills, LAX sole source contracts are highly unusual. The three-year award to the university’s OSHA training center indicates its significance in the region, which includes California, Nevada, Hawaii, and Guam. It is the only OSHA authorized TIEC in Los Angeles and has been in operation since 2008.

“We’ve been doing some contract training for LAWA at LAX and they liked the job we’ve been doing, so they sole sourced us,” Vogel said of the new contract, adding that the Bradley Terminal expansion is one of the largest of its kind in the world. “We’re training many of the subcontractors on this project that need their OSHA safety training.”

The CSU Dominguez Hills OSHA TIEC conducts on-campus and on-site training for companies and independent contractors who need OSHA standard safety training to make them eligible to work on construction and environmental, health and safety industry-related projects. After completion of a typical 32-hour course, participants receive an Advanced Certificate in Safety and Health from CSU Dominguez Hills and the U.S. Department of Labor. The certificate is available only through an authorized OSHA Training Institute Education Center.

The OSHA training center also offers on-campus trainer level courses that qualify individuals to become OSHA course instructors.
