Department of Theatre and Dance Announces Tony Award-Winning Play ‘Seven Guitars’

January 24, 2020

Seven Guitars(Carson, CA) – In celebration of Black History Month, California State University, Dominguez Hills’ (CSUDH) Department of Theatre and Dance has announced the theatrical production of American playwright August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning drama “Seven Guitars.” Performances will take place Feb. 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 8 p.m., and Feb. 23 and March 1 at 2 p.m. in CSUDH’s University Theatre.

Set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1948, “Seven Guitars” takes place after the untimely death of Floyd “Schoolboy” Barton, a local blues guitarist on the edge of stardom, whose friends gather after his funeral to mourn and grapple with his legacy.

The fifth chapter in Wilson’s epic “American Century Cycle,” “Seven Guitars” strikes moving chords of the African American experience in the 20th century through the examination of faith, artistry, humor, oppression, brutality, and love.

Staged by theatre arts faculty member Jozben Barrett, “Seven Guitars” is the third production of the Department of Theatre and Dance’s 2019-2020 season, and is produced in association with the CSUDH Black Theatre program.

“While the play takes place more than 70 years ago, August Wilson has an extraordinary way of crafting his characters and the experiences they share so they’re relatable to today’s audience, making his stories timeless and universal,” said Barrett.

The cast of “Seven Guitars” is led by CSUDH theatre arts majors Nisey Turner and Irene Jones in the roles of Louise and Ruby. Floyd Barton, his good friend Canewell, and his love interest Vera, will be played by guest artists Caleb Thermidor, Blessing Oluwole, and Jordan Hyman, respectively. The play also includes CSUDH alumni Phil Bray in the role of Hedley, and Tevin Jackson as Red Carter. Theatre arts major Danielle DeGuzman will serve as stage manager.

Ticket prices for “Seven Guitars” are $18 for general admission, and $13 for students and senior citizens. Special rates are available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets may be purchased by calling (310) 243-3589, or online at www.csudh.edu/theatre/tickets.
