STEM Advantage, a nonprofit that has been supporting California State University, Dominguez Hills students since 2013, was named Nonprofit Team of the Year by the Los Angeles Business Journal.
The newspaper presented the award on June 22 at its annual Nonprofit and Corporate Citizens Awards gala. STEM Advantage was one of 103 nominees and four finalists for the top honor.
STEM Advantage seeks to address the employment needs facing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries in the United States, the nonprofit encourages young women and students from under-served communities to pursue careers in STEM fields. Since the nonprofit first selected CSUDH as its pilot university, 55 students–primarily in the Department of Computer Science–have benefited from the with scholarships, one-on-one mentorships with STEM professionals, and paid internships at such prominent companies as Toyota, DirecTV and Farmers Insurance Group, to name a few.
