College of Arts and Humanities

Dance majors Nathan Ortiz and Brianna Colon received a positive review for their choreography and performances during the “Informal Concert” sessions at the American College Dance Festival Association Baja Regional Conference held at El Camino College in April. Ortiz presented his original piece “To be continued…” and Colon presented her duet “Chasing Clouds.” Senior physics major Ruben Medina’s performance of “Solo for Shoes,” a dance choreographed specifically for him by CSU Long Beach dance instructor Summer Brown, was chosen for the conference’s Baja Regional Gala Concert.

Students in the CSU Dominguez Hills Tau Epsilon Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta national history honors society represented the Department of History at the Phi Alpha Theta Southern California Regional Conference at CSU San Marcos in April. Erasmo Tornes and Christian Gomez presented “Jazz Waves of Los Angeles” during a session on U.S. music history, and Vicent Jurado presented “Caesar Wheeling and Dealing during the Gallic War” during a session on ancient history.

Ken Givens has been awarded the Department of Music New Century Endowed Music Competition Scholarship for excellence in original composition and academic success. The scholarship was established in 2010 through a $10,000 donation from an anonymous source.

 

College of Business Administration and Public Policy

Nicole Leonard, a junior business administration major who transferred from Marymount College this fall, will be participating in the Panetta Institute for Public Policy’s Congressional Internship Program from August through November, serving in the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.

Gwendolyn Satchell, a senior majoring in business administration with a marketing focus, has been chosen to participate in the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities National Internship Program, through which she will spend the summer interning at the National Credit Union Administration in Albany, New York.

 

College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences

Political science major Tené Green is completing a spring 2013 internship in Washington D.C. through the Cal State D.C. Program, which is organized through the CSU Fullerton campus and open to juniors, seniors and graduates students within the CSU.

The Department of Psychology has named Michael Gomez, Hugh Leonard and Kelly Whaling undergraduate Outstanding Students of the Year, and Brenda Escobar graduate Outstanding Student of the Year.

Anthropology major Alexx Salazar has been selected by the nonprofit Teach Cambodia Inc. to serve as a volunteer and intern this summer in Cambodia. She will be working with the teachers and students at Sambour School in Phnom Penh on a number of projects and programs organized by Teach Cambodia.

 

College of Professional Studies

Thirteen students from the Division of Health Sciences represented the university during a visit to the State Capitol in Sacramento organized for health science and public health programs from each CSU campus. The students met with state senators, attended a State Assembly Health Committee hearing and a board meeting of health reform oversight board Health Exchange, and listened to presentations by California Department of Public Health officials regarding public health policy issues and careers in public health. The students who participated were Daily Pacheco, Cecilia Valdez, Jam Isaga, Angeline Lee, Anna Rivie, Rudy Rangel, Danny Azucar, Aaron Reyes, Alisha Nicole Fletcher, Christine Schurawel, Helen Preciado, Kimberly Lyman and Spencer Nelson. They were accompanied by assistant professor of health science Enrique Ortega.

Through a competitive review process, student leaders in the university’s Graduate Association of Social Workers were selected by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) California Chapter to give a 15-minute presentation during the NASW Legislative Lobby Days in Sacramento in April. Charmaine Utz, Avayna Shepherd and Julieta Ortiz presented information on the Title Protection for Social Workers, one of the bills that NASW was lobbying for during the two-day event. The NASW Lobby Days is attended by more than 1,000 students and professionals. Utz, Shepherd and Ortiz were among 20 students from CSU Dominguez Hills who attended.

Juan Cave II, an Orthotics and Prosthetics Program graduate student, has been awarded the 2013 Sam D. Benson Scholarship from the International African American Prosthetics & Orthotic Coalition.
