Student Highlights: May 2013

StudentHighlightsIn this section we recognize the honors and activities that our students accomplish outside the classroom.

 

College of Arts and Humanities

Amy Blair and Laura Murphy, students majoring in negotiation, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, developed a folk dance and yoga class as a way of teaching conflict resolution skills to middle school students at the Watts United Youth Peacebuilders Project. Laura chronicles the project in her blog.

 

College of Extended and International Education

Randall Weaver, who recently graduated with his Master of Arts in Humanities through the Humanities Master of Arts External Degree (HUX) program, received the university’s 2013 Outstanding Thesis in the Humanities award for his thesis “The Forest Beneath the Clouds: Chinese-Americans and Accommodations in Nineteenth Century Northwestern California,” which compared and analyzed the conditions and experiences of two adjacent Chinese-American communities in Humboldt and Trinity Counties between 1850 and 1900.

 

College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences

Biochemistry major Victor Bell will be in Missouri for the summer working in the Ornitz Lab in the Department of Developmental Biology at Washington University in St. Louis as part of the AMGEN Scholars Program.

Chemistry major Cesar DeLeon will be part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows program June through August at the Kellogg School of Science and Technology at The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego.

Psychology major John Gibson will be taking part in a four-week research internship this summer at the NASA University Research Center, Center for Human Factors in Advanced Aeronautics Technologies (CHAAT) on the campus of California State University, Long Beach.

Peter William Halcrow, who recently graduated with his Master of Science in Biology, received the university’s 2013 Outstanding Thesis in Science award for his thesis “Quantitative Medical Imaging: Initial Studies of Noncontact Ultrasound Applied to Cortical Bone Phantoms,” based on initial steps of a study he and his thesis committee chair, physics professor Ken Ganezer,  conducted looking at applying Noncontact Ultrasound to the in-vivo monitoring of osteoporosis and to skeletal quantitative ultrasound imaging using cortical bone phantoms.

Psychology major Jose Lara-Ruiz presented at the Social Science Research and Instructional Council Student Conference held at San Francisco State University on May 2.

Microbiology major Kumar Tiger will be conducting research in the cellular bioengineering lab at Rutgers University this summer as part of the Research in Science and Engineering (RISE) summer research program.

Psychology major Destinie Thompson will be at the University of Iowa this summer as part of UI’s Summer Research Opportunities Program.

College of Professional Studies

Six students majoring in heath science presented at the Social Science Research and Instructional Council Student Conference held at San Francisco State University on May 2. They were Casey Cho, Danny Azucar (Class of 2013), Ishikia Harris (Class of 2013), Jasmine Wahab, Lisa Steward (Class of 2013) and Spenser Nelson.

 

 

 

 

 

First-year Master of Social Work students were invited by Carson City Councilman Mike Gipson to present their MSW 511 Policy Practice research on community stakeholder involvement during the May 7 City of Carson Council meeting. Lupe Cortez and Alicia Coulter presented their recommendation to coordinate currently isolated Carson-based programs serving children, including obesity reduction initiatives, and to invite and incorporate participation from a range of diverse stakeholders. Shawnee Smith and Diego Lopez presented policy approaches to reduce the stigma of treating Carson residents with HIV to increase healthcare utilization and well-being. Mayor Jim Dear commended the students and suggested that they join the city’s research initiative underway with the RAND Corporation and faculty at University of California, Los Angeles, that is addressing similar issues.
