From its beginnings in 2005 as a small discussion group for black female students residing in campus housing, Sisters United has grown to encompass the needs of all African and African American female students at California State University, Dominguez Hills. By facilitating one-on-one mentorships with faculty or staff members, the program has been instrumental in ensuring the success of students by helping them balance maintaining academic excellence with all other aspects of their lives. Eleven students from the Minority Biomedical Research Support program (MBRS) and the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program at California State University, Dominguez Hills attended the 2010 national conference of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), which took place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 in Anaheim. Univision Los Angeles brought its education fair, “Feria Es El Momento, Edúcate” to California State University, Dominguez Hills for a second year on Oct. 9. The event featured exhibitors from all levels of elementary, secondary, and higher education, as well as representatives of Chivas USA, health care organizations and other supplementary educational programs. The event was sponsored by Univision KMEX 34, Telefutura 46, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, CommuniCard, and CSU Dominguez Hills. Tri-Carson: Inaugural Event to Introduce CSU Dominguez Hills and City of Carson to Triathlete Community
The first Tri-Carson, a reverse triathlon that consists of a 5K run, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 200-meter swim will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills and surrounding streets just east of the university. The event, which is co-sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, is presented by the City of Carson, the Carson Chamber of Commerce, and CSU Dominguez Hills. California State University, Dominguez Hills has partnered with Zimride to launch a social network for ridesharing.
