Tree-Ring Lab Gives Students ‘Core’ Hands-On Experience

Education is all about empowering students, according to Parveen Chhetri, assistant professor in the Department of Earth Science and Geography at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). For the trio of student assistants working in CSUDH's Tree-Ring Lab -- David “Skip” Saldana, Michelle Mohr, and Gabriel Angulo -- that means getting invaluable hands-on experience in the skills of dendrochronology, the dating and study of annual growth rings in trees. For Elvira (Vera) Teller, lecturer of information systems and operations management at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), being an educator means helping students make connections and challenging them to reach their full potential. Teller, who has been teaching at CSUDH for 10 years, was honored this year with the Catherine H. Jacobs Outstanding Faculty Lecturer Award. California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis spent an eventful day at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) on July 24, learning about the university's master plan, demographics and enrollment growth, experiencing STEM programs that enhance academic achievement, and engaging in immersive conversations with students. Kounalakis, who is a member of the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees by virtue of her office, is on a series of fact-finding visits to campuses in the CSU and the University of California systems. CSUDH Receives Grant to Develop STEM Faculty Retention Program

(Carson, CA) - The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) a three-year, $332,133 grant to develop a collaborative, strengths-based training program that addresses improving retention and tenure for early-career, underrepresented minority faculty in STEM fields. Titled “The AGEP California State University Underrepresented Minority STEM Faculty Alliance Model: A Culturally-Informed Strengths-Based Approach to Advance Early-Career Faculty Success,” the research program was developed through CSUDH's Faculty Development Center, which will take the lead in the grant's implementation across four California State Universities (CSU) ...
