With a box full of books precariously balanced on his shoulder, Jaime Torres checked out some of the displays on the main fairground during the sixth annual “Feria de Educación” Hispanic education fair at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) on Oct. 11. The day before Torres, who lives in Palmdale, had heard about the fair while watching the news on Univision 34, KMEX. Nursing Student’s Program Helps Save Lives in State Prison
Kelly Ranson, a nursing graduate student at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), has taken her award-winning class assignment to develop a health improvement process for a chosen population of study and successfully implemented it in the unique place where she works, Kern Valley State Prison. As chief nurse executive for the level-4 high-security facility for the past five years, Ranson immediately knew she wanted to focus on the inmate population when CSUDH Assistant Professor of Nursing Lauren Outland assigned the project in her Health Promotion and Disease Prevention course. A third-grade girl in an Anderson Elementary School uniform looks excited yet a little apprehensive as she takes her turn swinging at the ball perched on top of a batting tee. She chokes up high on the bat, takes aim. It's a swing and a miss. “That's okay,” says Kevin Lugo, a kinesiology major who plays first base for California State University, Dominguez Hills' (CSUDH) baseball team. “Try again.” He places another ball on the tee.
