Ty Herring never imagined that as a college student he would get a glimpse behind the curtain at the NFL’s West Coast headquarters in Inglewood. But for two weeks in June, he worked side by side with the creative team that packages game footage and graphics for the NFL Insider television program. “You walk into this incredible atmosphere,” says Herring, recalling the moment he arrived at the headquarters. “Highlight clips are playing on all the TV monitors, and team branding is hanging everywhere. Toro Earns Black Student Success Scholarship, Aims to Elevate Black Artists
Armand Jovaughn Egere is proud to be a Black artist. “It’s a type of activism,” says the CSUDH fifth-year student. “The way my story is typically written, I’m not supposed to make it. But I’m out here beating the odds, and trying to be a symbol for other young Black artists.” Egere’s leadership, as well as his service promoting antiracism and culture change to elevate Black excellence, have earned him the CSU’s first-ever Black Student Success Scholarship, sponsored by the CSU Foundation. Homecoming — The Encore Hits All the Right Notes as Alums Show Their Toro Pride
The sounds of live music and the scents of local food vendors filled the Sculpture Garden at CSUDH on June 22 as an estimated 500 alumni, faculty, administrators, and their family members marked Homecoming 2024 in an event dubbed The Encore. Severe storm forecasts earlier in the year preempted a week of festivities originally scheduled in February. The warm June weather could not have been more accommodating as attendees relaxed in the shade, danced to the music of DW3 and the CSUDH Jazz Ensemble, or mingled with fellow alums in the beer and wine garden. From a young age, Mariah Sarabia understood that education was a vital lifeline to the future she envisioned for herself. “I knew the value of higher education,” she recalls. “When my parents immigrated from Mexico, they didn't have any education at all. “It’s never been a better time to be a good journalist, says Bria Overs, a CSUDH alumna, award-winning reporter, and former editor of the campus newspaper The Bulletin. It’s also never been harder to build a successful career in a shrinking industry plagued by hyper-partisanship, layoffs, and increasing competition.
