California State University, Dominguez Hills has received the first award of a three-year $749,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program to offer professional development and support to algebra teachers in middle and high schools in predominately economically disadvantaged areas of Carson and Los Angeles that serve a large minority population. Twenty-one teachers from middle and high schools in the south region of the Los Angeles Unified School District were back in the classroom for three weeks this summer, but unlike during the school year, they were not in front of the class. This year, Kristina (Kris) Hale and Carlos Giron are expanding their world view, literally. The juniors from California State University, Dominguez Hills have been named 2012-13 recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a competitive grant program through the U.S. State Department that aims to make it financially easier for undergraduates to afford the opportunity to study abroad either for a summer, semester, or year. Artist, retired teacher, and California State University, Dominguez Hills alumna Jeanne Anderson Allen (Class of '82, M.A., humanities) has always found a way to keep following her passions.
